# How to convert USDT to AED and send it to a UAE bank account

Deposit USDT and send an AED payout: the USDT is converted as part of the payment and reaches the payee's UAE IBAN by the Instant Payment Platform in real time, or by UAEFTS for larger amounts. Under CBUAE rules, mainland UAE suppliers generally can't accept USDT for goods, so they're paid in dirhams.

> **This is a guide, not a financial promotion.** It isn't an offer, solicitation or invitation to use Align's services in the UAE, and Align doesn't directly onboard retail or business users there. It's for businesses based outside the UAE that pay UAE bank accounts. Stablecoins can lose value and may not always be transferable or easy to sell. Align Payments Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC in Canada as a money services business (no. N300000203).

## The short answer

Deposit USDT to your Align balance on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum or Optimism, then make an AED payout. The USDT is converted as part of the payment, and the dirhams go to the payee's UAE IBAN by the Instant Payment Platform (IPP), in real time at any hour, or by UAEFTS for larger amounts. This is how a company outside the UAE pays a UAE supplier that can't accept USDT itself.

## At a glance

| | USDT to AED |
|---|---|
| Networks Align accepts for USDT | Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism |
| Payout rails | Instant Payment Platform (IPP) and UAEFTS |
| How long the rail takes | IPP: real-time settlement, 24/7. UAEFTS: real-time gross settlement during the system's business hours |
| Who can receive | Your company's own account, or a third party such as a supplier; Align may ask for the invoice |
| Who can send | Companies based outside the UAE; Align doesn't onboard companies based in it |

## Step by step

1. **Deposit USDT on a supported network.** About half of all USDT is on Tron and two fifths on Ethereum, according to DefiLlama's figures for 21 October 2026. Send from the network the USDT is on now, and test with a small amount first. On Polygon, Arbitrum or Optimism, confirm with Align which USDT token contract it accepts.
2. **Get the supplier's IBAN and legal name.** A UAE IBAN has 23 characters: AE, two check digits, a three-digit bank code and a 16-digit account number. Copy it from the supplier's invoice or a written confirmation, not from an email that changes their details.
3. **Check the amount against IPP's limit.** Al Etihad Payments described a limit of AED 50,000 per transaction for the Instant Payment Platform in April 2024. Larger payments go by UAEFTS during its business hours.
4. **Send the payout.** The USDT in your balance is converted as part of the AED payment.
5. **Paying a third party?** The payment goes through your named virtual account, and Align may ask for the invoice behind it. Quote the invoice number in the reference.

## Why a UAE supplier wants dirhams, not USDT

The Central Bank of the UAE's Payment Token Services Regulation (Circular No. 2/2024, published in June 2024) treats stablecoins denominated in other currencies, such as USDT, as foreign payment tokens. A merchant or other person in the UAE selling goods or services may accept one only if a CBUAE-registered foreign payment token issuer issued it, and only as payment for virtual assets or virtual asset derivatives. Licensed and registered firms may only facilitate transfers of foreign payment tokens used that way. The regulation doesn't apply in the DIFC and ADGM financial free zones, which have their own regimes.

As of September 2026, no global stablecoin issuer, Tether included, held CBUAE foreign payment token registration, DLA Piper wrote in October 2026. Inside ADGM, the picture differs: ADGM recognized USDT as an accepted virtual asset in December 2024, on networks including Ethereum, Solana and Avalanche, so firms licensed there can offer services involving it. That covers firms in ADGM, not a supplier on the UAE mainland being paid for goods.

Tether announced in August 2024 that it was developing a dirham-pegged stablecoin with Phoenix Group and Green Acorn Investments, and would seek a licence under the same regulation. Dirham stablecoins are licensed separately from foreign ones and must be issued from the UAE. Until a supplier can lawfully take USDT, the conversion has to happen before the money reaches them: you hold USDT outside the UAE, and they receive a bank transfer in dirhams.

## The rate, and what moves it

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar, and the Central Bank of the UAE publishes the rate as 3.6725 dirhams per dollar. USDT tracks the dollar, so the AED amount mostly depends on the provider's pricing for the conversion. Ask for the quote in dirhams for the exact invoice amount, so a supplier invoicing in AED receives the full figure.

Tether publishes a quarterly attestation by BDO. The latest, published on 31 July 2026, showed 183.6 billion USD of tokens issued at 30 June 2026 and 187.75 billion USD of assets. If you hold a balance for more than a few days, the [USDT vs USDC guide](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/usdt-vs-usdc-for-business) compares the two issuers' reporting.

## How this works with Align

Align pays dirhams over the Instant Payment Platform and UAEFTS from a named virtual account in your company's name. Your balance is held in USDC or USDT, and the stablecoin is converted when you pay. If UAE customers pay you, an [AED business account for companies outside the UAE](https://alignlabs.dev/accounts/aed-business-account) gives you a named AED IBAN they can pay locally, and dirhams you receive land in the same balance. Align doesn't onboard companies based in the UAE. Check the [prohibited and restricted use list](https://docs.alignlabs.dev/compliance/prohibited-and-restricted-use) for your country and industry. Regulated services are provided through licensed banking partners.

## Common questions

### Can I pay a UAE supplier in USDT directly?

Usually not. Under the Central Bank of the UAE's Payment Token Services Regulation, a merchant in the UAE selling goods or services may accept a foreign-currency stablecoin only if a CBUAE-registered issuer issued it and it's used to buy virtual assets. As of September 2026, Tether didn't hold that registration, according to DLA Piper. Paying the supplier's AED IBAN by bank transfer avoids the question.

### What details do I need to pay a UAE bank account?

The payee's IBAN, which in the UAE has 23 characters and starts with AE, and the account holder's name exactly as their bank holds it. Put the invoice number in the payment reference.

### How fast does the dirham payment arrive?

On the Instant Payment Platform, settlement is in real time, 24/7, for payments within its limit. Above it, payments go by UAEFTS, the Central Bank's real-time gross settlement system, during its business hours.

### What exchange rate applies?

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 per dollar, and USDT tracks the dollar, so the rate mostly reflects the provider's pricing. Align quotes pricing on request.
