# Agentic payments and x402: how AI agents pay, and what's real in 2026

x402 lets an agent pay for an API call inside the HTTP request, usually in USDC, and is now governed by a Linux Foundation body backed by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Google. Payment counts are large but dollar volume is small: about $50 million by April 2026.

## Key takeaways

1. x402 lets an AI agent or app pay for an API call or web resource inside the HTTP request itself: the server answers 402 Payment Required with a price, the client sends a signed payment, and the server delivers. USDC is the most common asset.
2. It now has industry backing: the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation launched with members including Coinbase, Cloudflare, Stripe, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Circle and Shopify.
3. Usage is real but small in money terms. Coinbase says its platform has processed more than 100 million x402 payments, while Forkast estimated about $50 million of cumulative x402 volume by April 2026.
4. For a business selling an API or data, x402 is a way to charge per call without accounts or cards. The open questions are reconciliation, tax records and converting many small stablecoin payments into fiat revenue.

## The short answer

**Agentic payments** are payments made by software acting for a person or business: an AI agent buying data, compute or a service as part of a task. **x402** is the protocol most of these payments use today. It revives HTTP's 402 status code, Payment Required, so a server can quote a price and an agent can pay in the same request, usually in USDC, with no account, card form or checkout page.

The infrastructure arrived fast in 2026: the protocol moved to the Linux Foundation, with Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and others as members. The money is still small. For a business, it's worth understanding now if you sell an API, data or digital content, and less urgent if you don't.

## How an x402 payment works

Coinbase's documentation describes the flow in nine steps, which come down to four:

1. **The client asks for a resource**, such as an API call or a page.
2. **The server replies 402 Payment Required**, with the price, the recipient and the payment options it accepts, such as USDC on Base.
3. **The client signs a payment** and repeats the request with the proof of payment attached.
4. **The server has a facilitator verify and settle the payment**, then returns the resource with a confirmation.

The protocol isn't tied to one network or asset: the same handshake works across EVM networks and Solana. Sellers can charge a fixed price, authorize a maximum and settle only what's used, or defer settlement and batch many payments.

## Who's behind it

Coinbase created x402. On 2 April 2026, the Linux Foundation announced it was launching the x402 Foundation to govern the protocol, and in July 2026 the foundation launched with around 40 members. Its premier members include Adyen, Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stripe and Visa. Mastercard tied its role to its Agent Pay for Machines work.

## How much is it used?

| | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| x402 payments processed by Coinbase's developer platform | More than 100 million | Coinbase (accessed November 2026) |
| Cumulative x402 transactions | 165 million, as of April 2026 | Forkast |
| Cumulative x402 volume | About $50 million, as of April 2026 | Forkast |
| Forecast US agentic commerce in 2030 | $300 billion to $1 trillion a year | Bain, McKinsey and J.P. Morgan, as cited by Forkast |

The gap between counts and value is the story: millions of payments of cents or less, for API calls and content, and an unknown share of tests.

## What it means for a business

**If you sell an API, data or content:** x402 lets you charge per request without accounts, subscriptions or card fees that make small payments uneconomic. The practical work is on your side of the payment:

- **Receiving.** An address on a network you choose, or a provider that receives for you.
- **Reconciliation.** Thousands of small payments need matching to usage, customers and invoices or receipts.
- **Tax.** Each payment is revenue in your accounting currency, and VAT or sales tax rules still apply to what you sell. See [VAT on stablecoin payments](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/vat-on-stablecoin-payments).
- **Conversion.** Turning a stream of USDC into dollars, euros or pounds in your bank account, and paying your own costs.

**If your agents buy services:** set spending limits per agent and per task, keep the agent's wallet separate from your treasury, and log what each payment bought.

## How this works with Align

Align's [x402 gateway](https://alignlabs.dev/products/agentic-payments) is designed to bridge agent payments and bank accounts: agents pay in stablecoins over x402, and Align aggregates the payments, converts them and settles to your company's [named USD, EUR or GBP account](https://alignlabs.dev/products/virtual-accounts), with the payments visible alongside your other transactions. To use it, [contact the team](https://alignlabs.dev/contact) for API access.

## Common questions

### What is x402?

An open protocol for paying over HTTP, created by Coinbase and now governed by the x402 Foundation at the Linux Foundation. It uses the long-reserved HTTP status code 402, Payment Required. A server tells the client what a resource costs; the client signs a payment and retries; a facilitator verifies and settles it; the server returns the resource.

### Which networks and tokens does x402 use?

Coinbase's documentation says the same handshake works across EVM networks and Solana, that USDC is the most common asset, and that sellers can accept any ERC-20 token on EVM networks or any SPL token on Solana. Coinbase's facilitator has processed payments on Base and Solana.

### Is agentic commerce big yet?

Not in dollars. Transaction counts are large, but most payments are tiny and some activity is testing. Forkast estimated about $50 million of cumulative x402 volume and 165 million transactions as of April 2026, against forecasts of hundreds of billions of dollars of US agentic commerce by 2030.

### Do I need to hold crypto to sell to agents?

You need an address that can receive the stablecoin, or a provider that receives it for you. Sellers can receive funds at addresses they control, custodial wallets or business accounts, and a provider can convert the payments to fiat.
