# Multi-currency business accounts compared

Holding a currency isn't the same as having local details in it. Compare providers by the currencies your customers pay in, whether you can send as well as receive, and whether they accept a company from your country.

## Key takeaways

1. A multi-currency business account holds several currencies under one login, but holding a currency isn't the same as having local account details in it.
2. As of November 2026, Wise holds 40+ currencies with full local details in nine, Payoneer lists local receiving accounts in 13, and Airwallex covers USD, EUR and GBP on local rails.
3. Check four things before choosing: which currencies have local details, whether you can send as well as receive, whose name is on the account, and whether your country is eligible.
4. At 0.5% over the interbank rate, converting $100,000 a month costs $500. FX cost often matters more than the monthly plan fee.

## The short answer

A multi-currency business account lets one company hold several currencies under one login and get paid in them without converting first. The best choice is the provider with local account details in the currencies your customers pay in, and that accepts a company registered in your country.

As of November 2026, Wise offers the widest list of currencies to hold, Airwallex offers local rails in major currencies, and Payoneer offers receiving accounts in 13 currencies. Align offers named USD, EUR, GBP and AED accounts with stablecoins alongside them, so it covers fewer currencies but adds USDC, USDT and EURC.

## Hold, receive locally, receive by SWIFT

Providers quote one big number, but a currency can mean three different things.

| Level | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hold | You can keep a balance in that currency | Useful for paying later without converting now |
| Local details | You get account details on that country's rails, such as ACH or SEPA | Customers pay you like a local supplier, at local cost |
| SWIFT only | You can receive it as an international wire | Customers pay more, and intermediaries may deduct fees |

A provider that "supports 40 currencies" may offer local details in far fewer. Count the ones you use, not the headline. For the differences between rails, see [SWIFT code vs IBAN vs routing number](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/swift-code-vs-iban-vs-routing-number).

## Options compared

As of November 2026, from each provider's own pages:

| SWIFT | 22 currencies listed, including CHF, JPY, CNY and AED | On some accounts, by location | More currencies by SWIFT | USD |
| Send from it | Yes | Yes | Receiving accounts can't send | Yes |
| Who can open it | USD details depend on your address | Companies registered in 69 listed countries and territories | Businesses, freelancers and platform sellers | Registered companies, apart from sanctioned countries and the FATF grey list |
| Listed cost | 31 USD for local details on its US page; 6.11 USD to receive a USD wire | Explore at $0 a month on its US page; FX 0.5% to 1% over interbank | Varies by country and currency | By quote |

A few limits don't fit in a table.

**Wise.** It's the broad option. USD details aren't available everywhere: Wise lists excluded addresses including Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan, Türkiye and the UAE. Its US pricing page shows free local receipts in USD, EUR and GBP, with 2.39 EUR and 2.16 GBP for SWIFT receipts. See [Wise Business alternatives](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/wise-business-alternatives) if it doesn't serve you.

**Airwallex.** Your business must be registered in a listed location, and being on the list doesn't guarantee approval. Rails differ by account location: USD in the US has ACH and Fedwire, while USD in Singapore is SWIFT only. FedNow and RTP are for eligible customers. AED isn't available to customers based in the UAE. [Airwallex vs Wise Business](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/airwallex-vs-wise-business) compares the two.

**Payoneer.** It suits sellers who get paid by marketplaces and business clients. Its receiving accounts "can only be used for receiving funds", accept only business payments, and decline payments from your own bank account, except to add funds. Payoneer warns that intermediary banks can charge wire fees, typically 20 to 30 USD. [Wise vs Payoneer](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/wise-vs-payoneer) goes deeper.

**Revolut Business.** Often on shortlists for companies in the markets it serves. We couldn't check its current pages for this guide, so see [Align vs Revolut Business](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/align-vs-revolut-business), last checked in October 2026.

**Your own bank.** Many banks offer foreign currency accounts. You keep an existing relationship, but they may receive by SWIFT only, not on local rails. Ask yours what it offers and at what exchange rate.

## Which fits your company

| If you... | Look first at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Need many currencies, including smaller ones | Wise | Widest list to hold |
| Want local collection in major currencies, and spend tools | Airwallex | Local rails, if your country is listed |
| Get paid by marketplaces or clients abroad | Payoneer | Built for receiving; check it can pay what you need to pay |
| Get paid in stablecoins and by bank, or pay suppliers from USDC or USDT | Align | Named accounts and stablecoin rails together |
| Need a USD account from outside the US | Compare all of them | [USD account for a non-US company](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/usd-account-for-non-us-company) lists what to ask |
| Have a US company with US operations | A US provider | [US business accounts for non-residents](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/us-business-account-for-non-residents) covers requirements |

## What it costs: a worked example

Say your company receives $100,000 a month and converts all of it to euros. These figures are simple arithmetic on an FX markup, not quotes from any provider.

| FX markup over the interbank rate | Monthly cost | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25% | $250 | $3,000 |
| 0.5% | $500 | $6,000 |
| 1% | $1,000 | $12,000 |

At that volume, FX is worth far more attention than a plan fee. Airwallex's US page lists 0.5% for major currencies and 1% for others. The [FX cost calculator](https://alignlabs.dev/tools/fx-cost-calculator) shows what a payment lost to the exchange rate margin and fees, against the ECB reference rate.

The cheapest conversion is one you don't need. If you get paid in dollars and pay suppliers in dollars, a balance in each currency lets you skip it. That's the main reason to want one of these accounts.

## Five questions to ask before you apply

1. **Which of my currencies have local details?** Ask per currency, and for your country.
2. **Can I send from it, or only receive?** Some details are receive-only.
3. **Whose name is on the account?** It may be yours, or the provider's with a reference. This affects what customers see and whether payee checks pass. See [named vs pooled virtual IBANs](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/named-vs-pooled-virtual-iban).
4. **Who holds the money, and what protection applies?** The answer can differ by country. Don't assume deposit protection.
5. **Will it serve my industry and my owners?** Providers exclude different countries and activities. Check before you tell customers to pay a new account. If you're moving, the [switching guides](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/switch-from-wise-business) cover how to do it safely.

## Where Align fits

Align isn't a bank. It gives registered companies named accounts in USD, EUR, GBP and AED, in the company's own name, with USDC, USDT and EURC alongside them. Money paid into a named account stays in that currency's balance until you convert it or pay it out, and you see the rate and fee before you confirm. [USD, EUR, GBP and AED balances in Align](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/usd-and-eur-global-accounts) shows how it works.

[USD](https://alignlabs.dev/accounts/usd-business-account) accounts are for companies based outside the US. [EUR](https://alignlabs.dev/accounts/eur-iban-business-account), [GBP](https://alignlabs.dev/accounts/gbp-business-account) and [AED](https://alignlabs.dev/accounts/aed-business-account) accounts are for companies in the EU, the UK, the UAE and worldwide, apart from sanctioned countries and countries on the FATF grey list, and USD and AED aren't available in some other countries. ACH and wire access needs a second review by Align's US banking partner, which can decline or set limits. GBP details are for Faster Payments, so check with Align first if your customers pay by Bacs or CHAPS.

Four currencies is the limit. If you need Australian dollars, yen or Singapore dollars on local rails, another provider above is the better fit. Some countries and activities are prohibited, so check [eligibility](https://alignlabs.dev/eligibility) first. Pricing is by quote.

## Common questions

### What is a multi-currency business account?

It's an account that lets a company hold balances in several currencies under one login, and usually receive or pay in them without converting first. How much you can do in each currency differs: some have local account details, others only receive by SWIFT, and some can only be held.

### Which multi-currency business account is best?

It depends on the currencies you're paid in and where your company is registered. Wise covers the most currencies to hold. Airwallex suits companies that want local rails in major currencies. Payoneer suits sellers receiving from marketplaces and business clients. Align suits companies that want named USD, EUR, GBP and AED accounts alongside USDC, USDT and EURC.

### Is a multi-currency account a bank account?

Often not. Many providers are payment or e-money companies, or work through partner banks. Check who holds your money in your country and what protection applies. Align isn't a bank, so don't treat a balance with it as a bank deposit.

### Can I send money from a Payoneer receiving account?

No. Payoneer says receiving accounts can only be used for receiving funds. It also accepts only business payments from business accounts, and declines payments from a bank account in your own name, except when you're adding funds from your own bank.

### Can a company in the UAE get an AED account from these providers?

From Align, yes: a company based in the UAE can apply for a named AED account, subject to its review. Airwallex says its AED account isn't available to customers based in the UAE.
