# Stablecoin payments for small businesses: three ways to get paid in USDT and USDC

A small business can take stablecoins at checkout through a processor such as Stripe (1.5%, settled in local currency), receive them into a business account such as Align, or hold them in its own wallet. Infrastructure like BVNK, with a 500,000 USD monthly minimum, is built for payment companies and platforms.

## The short answer

A small business can get paid in stablecoins in three ways: at checkout through a payment processor, into a business account that receives stablecoins, or into its own wallet. Stripe's stablecoin payments, for example, cost 1.5% and settle in your local currency, with no volume minimum. A business account built on stablecoins, such as Align, receives USDC or USDT and pays suppliers in fiat from the same balance.

Stablecoin infrastructure such as BVNK's is built for payment companies and platforms, and as of October 2026 BVNK works only with businesses processing at least 500,000 USD a month. Below that, choose by how your customers want to pay and what you need to do with the money next.

## Three ways to get paid in stablecoins

| Option | Example | Fits when | Money lands as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment processor at checkout | Stripe stablecoin payments | You sell online and want stablecoins as one more payment method | Your local currency, in your Stripe balance |
| Business account built on stablecoins | Align | Customers or partners pay you in USDC or USDT, and you pay suppliers from the same balance | A stablecoin balance, with bank account details alongside |
| Your own wallet | A self-custody wallet | You're comfortable holding keys and arranging your own conversion to fiat | Tokens in your wallet |

**At checkout.** As of October 2026, Stripe's docs say customers can pay in USDC on Tempo, Ethereum, Solana, Polygon and Base, and the payment settles in your Stripe balance in your local currency. US businesses can accept stablecoin payments, and businesses in the EU, Hong Kong, Mexico and Switzerland are in a private preview. Stripe's US pricing page lists 1.5% of the transaction amount, compared with 2.9% + 30¢ for a domestic card, and each payment is capped at 10,000 USD. It works with Stripe Checkout, Payment Links, Invoicing and subscriptions.

**In a business account.** A business account built on stablecoins receives USDC or USDT directly and gives you bank account details next to the balance, so the same account can be paid by stablecoin or by bank transfer. Align gives named USD, EUR, GBP and AED accounts in your company's name, holds the balance in USDC or USDT, and receives USDT on Tron. See [how to accept USDT and USDC from business customers](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/accept-usdt-usdc-from-business-customers) for invoicing and record-keeping.

**In your own wallet.** You can publish a wallet address and get paid directly, with no provider in between. You then hold the keys yourself and need an exchange or another provider to turn the tokens into money in a bank account. A mistake with the address or network usually can't be undone: see [what to do if you send USDT or USDC to the wrong network](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/sent-usdt-to-wrong-network).

## Infrastructure is a different product

Some stablecoin companies sell to platforms that serve many customers, not to the business itself. As of October 2026:

- **BVNK**, part of Mastercard since August 2026, works with businesses that process at least 500,000 USD a month and have 6 months of trading history.
- **Bridge**, owned by Stripe, calls itself "a stablecoin platform built for developers", used through an API or inside another company's product.

They suit a fintech or marketplace building stablecoin payments for its own users. Our [BVNK alternatives](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/bvnk-alternatives) and [Bridge alternatives](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/bridge-alternatives-for-non-us-companies) guides compare them.

## Paying out in stablecoins

Getting paid is half of it. A stablecoin balance is most useful when some of your costs can be paid from it:

- **Contractors** who ask to be paid in USDC or USDT, often in countries where local banks are slow or expensive. See [how to pay international contractors](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/pay-international-contractors-in-usdc).
- **Suppliers** who are paid in their own currency by bank transfer, with the stablecoin converted as part of the payment. See [how to pay overseas suppliers from USDT or USDC](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/pay-overseas-suppliers-with-usdt-usdc).
- **Network fees.** Each transfer costs a network fee, which differs by network far more than by token. Our live [stablecoin fee tracker](https://alignlabs.dev/tools/stablecoin-fees) shows what one transfer costs right now.

## Before you start

- **Choose the token and network with your customers.** USDT mostly moves on Tron and Ethereum, and USDC sits mostly on Ethereum, followed by Solana. [Which network to use](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/which-network-for-usdt-usdc-payments) compares them.
- **Check the rules where you are.** In the EU, MiCA only lets authorized issuers offer stablecoins to the public, and USDT's issuer isn't authorized. See [cashing out USDT after MiCA](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/cash-out-usdt-to-eur-after-mica). In the US, the GENIUS Act takes effect by 18 January 2027: see the [GENIUS Act guide](https://alignlabs.dev/guides/genius-act-for-non-us-businesses).
- **Keep records.** For each payment, keep the customer, their wallet, the transaction hash and your invoice together. Your accountant and your provider can ask for them.

## Where Align fits

Align is a business account built on stablecoins for registered companies, with no volume minimum. You get named USD, EUR, GBP and AED accounts in your company's name, money received lands as USDC or USDT, and you pay out in those four currencies or send USDC and USDT to wallets, with Align paying the network fee on transfers from your balance. Align's AED accounts are for companies outside the UAE, and it doesn't onboard companies based there.

Align Payments Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC in Canada as a money services business (registration no. N300000203), and regulated services are provided through licensed financial institutions. Align isn't a bank and doesn't issue stablecoins. Pricing is quoted on request.

## Common questions

### Can a small business accept stablecoin payments without a minimum volume?

Yes. Minimums like BVNK's 500,000 USD a month apply to infrastructure sold to payment companies and platforms. A small business can take stablecoins at checkout through a payment processor such as Stripe, or open a business account that receives them, such as Align, without a volume minimum.

### How much does it cost to accept USDC with Stripe?

Stripe's US pricing page lists 1.5% of the transaction amount for stablecoin payments, including conversion to fiat, wallet and AML screening, and gas. The money settles in your Stripe balance in your local currency, and each payment is limited to 10,000 USD. As of October 2026, US businesses can accept them, and businesses in the EU, Hong Kong, Mexico and Switzerland are in a private preview.

### Should a small business hold stablecoins or convert them straight away?

That depends on what you pay out. If suppliers, contractors or your own treasury use USDC or USDT, holding saves a conversion each way. If your costs are in your local currency, converting on receipt keeps your books simple. Either way, a stablecoin balance isn't a bank deposit and isn't covered by deposit insurance.

### Can a customer charge back a stablecoin payment?

No. Tether says its token transactions aren't reversible, and Circle says it can't reverse a USDC transaction. Stripe says stablecoin payments have no disputes, and its refunds go back as stablecoins to the customer's original wallet.
