How to convert USDC to AED and send it to a UAE bank account

Send native USDC to your balance and make an AED payout: it's converted as part of the payment and reaches the payee's UAE IBAN by the Instant Payment Platform in real time, or by UAEFTS for larger amounts. USDC is recognized in the DIFC, but mainland UAE suppliers generally can't accept it for goods.

This is a guide, not a financial promotion. It isn't an offer, solicitation or invitation to use Align's services in the UAE, and Align doesn't directly onboard retail or business users there. It's for businesses based outside the UAE that pay UAE bank accounts. Stablecoins can lose value and may not always be transferable or easy to sell. Align Payments Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC in Canada as a money services business (no. N300000203).

The short answer

Send native USDC to your Align balance on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism or Avalanche, then make an AED payout. The USDC is converted as part of the payment, and the dirhams go to the payee's UAE IBAN by the Instant Payment Platform (IPP), in real time at any hour, or by UAEFTS for larger amounts. USDC is recognized in the DIFC, but a supplier on the UAE mainland generally can't accept it for goods, so the dirham bank transfer is the payment they receive.

Step by step

  1. Check you hold native USDC. On Arbitrum, Polygon and Optimism, bridged USDC.e is a different token, which Circle says it doesn't issue; confirm with Align which contract it accepts. Deposit on a network Align accepts, to the matching address, and test a small amount first.
  2. Get the supplier's IBAN and legal name. A UAE IBAN has 23 characters: AE, two check digits, a three-digit bank code and a 16-digit account number. Use the account holder's name exactly as their bank holds it.
  3. Check the amount against IPP's limit. Al Etihad Payments described a limit of AED 50,000 per transaction for the Instant Payment Platform in April 2024, and the payee's bank may apply its own. Larger payments go by UAEFTS during its business hours.
  4. Convert and pay. The USDC is converted as part of the AED payout. Ask for the quote in dirhams for the exact invoice amount.
  5. Paying a third party? Supplier payments go through your named virtual account, and Align may ask for the invoice behind the payment.

USDC in the UAE: the DIFC, ADGM and the mainland

USDC's status depends on where in the UAE the counterparty is.

  • The DIFC. On 17 February 2025, the Dubai Financial Services Authority recognized USDC and EURC, the first stablecoins approved under the DIFC's crypto token regime, so firms in the DIFC can use them for payments, treasury management and other services.
  • ADGM. Abu Dhabi Global Market's regulator, the FSRA, has accepted USDC for use within ADGM, DLA Piper wrote in October 2026.
  • The UAE mainland. The Central Bank of the UAE's Payment Token Services Regulation (Circular No. 2/2024, published in June 2024) lets a merchant or other person in the UAE selling goods or services accept a foreign-currency stablecoin only if a CBUAE-registered foreign payment token issuer issued it, and only as payment for virtual assets or virtual asset derivatives. As of September 2026, no global stablecoin issuer, Circle included, held that registration, DLA Piper wrote.

UAE banks are starting to connect the two. On 25 August 2026, the digital bank Zand announced plans to support USDC alongside its dirham-backed stablecoin, for eligible businesses within applicable legal and regulatory frameworks; the release describes planned support, not a live service. For a company outside the UAE paying a mainland supplier, the practical route stays the same: you hold USDC outside the UAE, and the supplier receives dirhams by bank transfer.

The rate, and what backs USDC

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar, and the Central Bank of the UAE publishes the rate as 3.6725 dirhams per dollar. USDC tracks the dollar, so the AED amount mostly depends on the provider's pricing for the conversion.

Circle's USDC page showed 71.9 billion USDC in circulation on 19 October 2026. On 22 October 2026, DefiLlama put 44.8 billion on Ethereum, 7.1 billion on Solana, 4.3 billion on Base, 2.2 billion on Arbitrum, 1.6 billion on Polygon, 0.4 billion on Avalanche and 0.2 billion on OP Mainnet. Circle discloses its reserve weekly and publishes monthly attestations by a Big Four accounting firm, most of the reserve sitting in a government money market fund managed by BlackRock.

How this works with Align

Align pays dirhams over the Instant Payment Platform and UAEFTS from a named virtual account in your company's name. Your balance is held in USDC or USDT, and the stablecoin is converted when you pay. If UAE customers pay you, an AED business account for companies outside the UAE gives you a named AED IBAN they can pay locally, and dirhams you receive land in the same balance. Align doesn't onboard companies based in the UAE, and doesn't issue stablecoins. Check the prohibited and restricted use list for your country and industry. Regulated services are provided through licensed banking partners.

Common questions

Is USDC allowed in the UAE?
It depends where. In the DIFC, the DFSA recognized USDC on 17 February 2025, so firms there can use it. On the UAE mainland, the Central Bank's Payment Token Services Regulation lets a merchant accept a foreign-currency stablecoin only if a CBUAE-registered issuer issued it and it's used to buy virtual assets, and as of September 2026 Circle didn't hold that registration, according to DLA Piper.
Which network should I send USDC on?
The one it's already on, if Align accepts it there: Ethereum, Solana, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism or Avalanche. On Arbitrum, Polygon and Optimism, check you hold native USDC, not bridged USDC.e, which Circle says it doesn't issue.
How fast does the dirham payment arrive?
On the Instant Payment Platform, settlement is in real time, 24/7, for payments within its limit. Above it, payments go by UAEFTS, the Central Bank's real-time gross settlement system, during its business hours.
What exchange rate applies?
The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 per dollar, and USDC is redeemable one for one for dollars with Circle, so the rate mostly reflects the provider's pricing. Align quotes pricing on request.
