Is a virtual IBAN a real IBAN?

It has the same format and works the same way for the payer. The European Banking Authority describes it as an identifier with the same format and functionality as a regular IBAN. Behind it, payments are routed to a master account held by a bank or payment institution.

The wider picture

The key points from the guide this answer comes from:

  1. With a named virtual IBAN, payers see your company as the account holder. With a pooled one, they see your provider's name, and your payment is matched by a reference.
  2. Since October 2025, euro-area banks check the payee's name before a euro transfer, so a pooled IBAN can show payers a no-match or close-match warning.
  3. A virtual IBAN has the same format and works the same way for the payer as any IBAN: payments route to a master account behind it.
  4. Refusing an IBAN from another EU or EEA country breaches the SEPA Regulation, though a UK or Swiss IBAN isn't covered.
