How to convert USDC to GBP and send it to a bank account

Send native USDC to your balance and make a GBP payout: it's converted as part of the payment and goes by Faster Payments, up to the £1 million scheme limit. For a larger single payment, CHAPS from a UK bank is the better fit.

This is a guide, not a financial promotion. It isn't an invitation or inducement to buy, sell or hold cryptoassets, and no FCA-authorized firm has approved it.

Risk warning (the FCA's standard wording). Don't invest unless you're prepared to lose all the money you invest. This is a high-risk investment and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong. The FCA also notes that some stablecoins have no assets backing them and have lost their value completely, and that you're highly unlikely to be covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. The short answer

Send USDC to your Align balance on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism or Avalanche, then make a GBP payout. The USDC is converted as part of the payment, and the pounds go by Faster Payments to the payee's sort code and account number, in most cases almost at once. Faster Payments carries up to £1 million per payment; above that, CHAPS from a UK bank is the alternative.

Step by step

  1. Check you hold native USDC. On Arbitrum, Polygon and Optimism, bridged USDC.e is a different token, which Circle says it doesn't issue; confirm with Align which contract it accepts. Deposit on a network Align accepts, to the matching address, and test a small amount first.
  2. Get the payee's details. You need the sort code, the account number and the account holder's name as their bank holds it. UK providers covered by Confirmation of Payee check the name before a payment is sent and warn on a close match or no match.
  3. Size the payment. Keep each payment within the £1 million Faster Payments scheme limit; individual banks set lower limits of their own.
  4. Convert and pay. The USDC is converted as part of the GBP payout. Ask for the quote in pounds for the exact invoice amount.
  5. Paying a third party? Supplier payments go through your named virtual account, and Align may ask for the invoice behind the payment.

Faster Payments limits, and when CHAPS fits better

Pay.UK says individual Faster Payments can go up to £1 million, but each provider sets its own limits, which can differ by channel and between personal and business customers. As of October 2026, online limits for a one-off business payment on Pay.UK's list include £99,999 at Lloyds Bank, £250,000 at Santander UK and £1 million at HSBC. Some providers also set daily limits, and Monzo, for example, says payments over £10,000 may be subject to further checks. These are sending limits, so for a payout the one that matters is the sending institution's.

CHAPS, run by the Bank of England, has no minimum or maximum, settles the same day and is irrevocable. It's usually open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. UK time, Monday to Friday except bank holidays, and customer payments must be submitted by 5:40 p.m. The Bank is targeting September 2027 for CHAPS settlement to start at 1:30 a.m. instead of 6:00 a.m. For a single payment above £1 million, a UK bank account that sends CHAPS is the better fit; Align pays sterling over Faster Payments.

USDC for a UK business

Circle's USDC page showed 71.9 billion USDC in circulation on 19 October 2026. On 22 October 2026, DefiLlama put 44.8 billion on Ethereum, 7.1 billion on Solana, 4.3 billion on Base, 2.2 billion on Arbitrum, 1.6 billion on Polygon, 0.4 billion on Avalanche and 0.2 billion on OP Mainnet. Circle discloses its reserve weekly and publishes monthly attestations by a Big Four accounting firm, most of the reserve sitting in a government money market fund managed by BlackRock.

Circle redeems USDC 1:1 for dollars, not pounds, so any sterling payout from USDC includes a dollar to sterling rate. In the UK, USDC is a stablecoin issued abroad, by Circle's US and French entities. Under the UK regime that takes full effect on 25 October 2027, stablecoins issued overseas will be treated in line with other qualifying cryptoassets, as the USDT to GBP page explains. In the EU, USDC is authorized under MiCA, and the European Banking Authority classified it as a significant e-money token on 14 October 2026.

How this works with Align

Align provides a named GBP account in your company's name, with your company shown as the account holder, and sends sterling over Faster Payments. Money you receive lands in your balance as USDC or USDT, and you can also pay out in USD or EUR from the same balance. Align Payments Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC in Canada as a money services business; regulated services are provided through licensed banking partners. Pricing is quoted on request. See the GBP account page and the prohibited and restricted use list.

Common questions

Can I pay a UK supplier at the weekend?
Yes, by Faster Payments, which Pay.UK says runs day and night, 365 days a year. CHAPS doesn't: the Bank of England says it's usually open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, except bank holidays.
When should I use CHAPS instead?
For a single sterling payment above the £1 million Faster Payments scheme limit. CHAPS, run by the Bank of England, has no maximum and settles the same day, Monday to Friday. Align pays sterling over Faster Payments, so use a UK bank account for CHAPS.
Can USDC be redeemed 1:1 for pounds?
No. Circle Mint redeems USDC 1:1 for US dollars, and EURC for euros, for institutional customers. A sterling payout from USDC therefore includes a dollar to sterling exchange rate, so ask for a quote on the exact amount you need to pay.
Which network holds the most USDC?
Ethereum, by a wide margin. On 22 October 2026, DefiLlama put 44.8 billion USDC on Ethereum, 7.1 billion on Solana and 4.3 billion on Base. Deposit on the network the USDC is already on if Align accepts it there, and on Arbitrum, Polygon or Optimism confirm with Align which contract it accepts.
