01The payment problem

Why web3 companies struggle to find an account

If you've searched for a crypto friendly business bank account, you know the pattern. Your company is funded in stablecoins or tokens, but your auditor, lawyers, landlord and much of your team want a bank transfer. To pay them, you first need a provider that accepts crypto companies at all.

As of November 2026, Wise says it doesn't work for businesses involved in cryptocurrency. Mercury serves crypto startups, DAOs and funds, but not exchanges or money services businesses, and its accounts hold fiat only. Some banks do serve the sector: our comparison of crypto friendly accounts sets out who they are and their limits, including when a bank is the better fit.

Opening an account is only the start. Your treasury needs a route from a wallet to a bank rail that an auditor can follow, and paying a team from stablecoins brings its own tax and wage rules.

02How it works with Align

One account between your wallets and bank rails

Align isn't a bank. It's a business account that keeps named accounts in your company's name next to your stablecoins, so you can move between the two.

  1. 01

    Bring money in

Send USDC, USDT or EURC from your own treasury wallet, or get paid in USD, EUR, GBP or AED into your named accounts. Each stays in its own balance until you act.

  2. 02

    Convert when you need to

Convert between stablecoins and currencies, with the rate and fee shown before you confirm. Conversion to currencies is switched on per account on request. Trades of $100,000 or more can go through the OTC desk.

  3. 03

Pay by bank or on chain

Pay suppliers and staff over ACH, Fedwire, SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments, IPP or UAEFTS, or send USDC or USDT to their wallets. Admins can approve payments above an amount you choose.

03Worked example

A month's bills from a USDC treasury

A protocol development company holds USDC in a multisig, and its bills are in dollars and euros. Align's pricing is quoted on request, so the example shows the flow, not the costs.

  1. 01

The company approves the month's budget, sends a small USDC test from its treasury wallet to its Align account, then sends the rest.

  2. 02

It converts part of the balance to USD and part to EUR, and checks the rate and fee before each conversion.

  3. 03

It pays its auditor and lawyers by bank from its named accounts, so they see the company as the payer.

  4. 04

It pays the contractors who asked for USDC from one CSV file, with every row checked before anything moves.

  5. 05

At month end, it downloads its statements and matches them, with the transaction hashes, to its wallet records.

Align holds USDC, USDT and EURC. BTC, ETH and your own token stay with your exchange or custodian. This is general information, not legal, tax or investment advice.

04Eligibility

Who can open an account

Align opens accounts for registered companies after a KYB review: create your account online, upload documents in 5 to 10 minutes, and expect a decision in 1 to 3 business days. Crypto and web3 companies are also reviewed for licensing, so run the eligibility check first and see what documents you need.

  • Licences Align can't onboard a business that needs a licence where it operates and doesn't hold one. If you run an exchange or hold customers' crypto, have your licence ready for the review.
  • Your own money You can't collect, hold or forward your customers' money on an Align account. AlignConnect is built for platforms that need that: each of their customers is onboarded with Align directly.
  • DAOs and foundations Align needs a registered company. A DAO with no legal entity can't open an account, and charities, foundations and non-profits aren't eligible, so a DAO would need a registered operating company.
  • Source of funds Expect to show where your money came from, such as investment agreements, grant letters and transfer receipts. If it came from a token sale, ask the team which evidence applies before you apply.
  • US dollars ACH and wire access is switched on at your request, after a second review by Align's US banking partner, which can decline or set limits.
  • Countries Align doesn't onboard companies in sanctioned countries such as Russia, Belarus, Iran, Syria or North Korea, or in countries on the FATF grey list, and USD and AED aren't available in some other countries. See the acceptable use policy.

A registered company can apply, and crypto and web3 companies go through a review. Align can't onboard a business that needs a licence where it operates and doesn't hold one, and the KYB review makes the decision.

Can Align hold BTC, ETH or our own token?

No. Align's docs list USDC, USDT and EURC, which sit next to your USD, EUR, GBP and AED balances. Other tokens need an exchange or custodian.

Is my balance covered by deposit insurance?

No. Align isn't a bank, and neither your currency balances nor your stablecoins have deposit insurance. Our trust page explains how balances are held.

Can we pay our team and contractors in USDC?

Yes, from your Align balance you can send USDC or USDT to their wallets, one at a time or from a CSV file. Align doesn't calculate or file payroll tax, and rules for paying employees in crypto vary by country.

How much does Align cost?

Fees vary with volume and currencies, and pricing is quoted on request. Contact the sales team with your monthly volume, currencies and countries for a quote.
