How to convert USDT to GBP and send it to a bank account
Deposit USDT and send a GBP payout: the USDT is converted as part of the payment and arrives by Faster Payments, usually almost immediately. MiCA is EU law; the UK's own cryptoasset regime takes full effect on 25 October 2027.

This is a guide, not a financial promotion. It isn't an invitation or inducement to buy, sell or hold cryptoassets, and no FCA-authorized firm has approved it.
Risk warning (the FCA's standard wording). Don't invest unless you're prepared to lose all the money you invest. This is a high-risk investment and you should not expect to be protected if something goes wrong. The FCA also notes that some stablecoins have no assets backing them and have lost their value completely, and that you're highly unlikely to be covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Align Payments Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC in Canada as a money services business (no. N300000203). This page is for businesses, not consumers.
The short answer
Deposit USDT to your Align balance on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum or Optimism, then make a GBP payout. The USDT is converted as part of the payment, and the pounds go by Faster Payments to a UK sort code and account number, usually within moments and at any hour. MiCA, the EU law behind the restrictions on USDT, doesn't apply in the UK; the UK's own cryptoasset regime takes full effect on 25 October 2027.

Step by step
- Deposit USDT on a supported network. About half of all USDT is on Tron and two fifths on Ethereum, according to DefiLlama's figures for 21 October 2026. Send from the network the USDT is on now, and test with a small amount first. On Polygon, Arbitrum or Optimism, confirm with Align which USDT token contract it accepts.
- Collect the payee's sort code, account number and name. Use the name exactly as their bank holds it, because UK providers covered by Confirmation of Payee check it before a payment is sent.
- Check the amount. Faster Payments allows up to £1 million per payment, and banks set lower limits of their own. For a larger payment, the USDC to GBP page explains when CHAPS fits better.
- Send the payout. The USDT in your balance is converted as part of the GBP payment.
- Paying a supplier? Third-party payments go through your named virtual account, and Align may ask for the invoice behind the payment. Quote the invoice number in the reference.
USDT under UK rules
The UK isn't part of MiCA. The EU platform restrictions on USDT, and ESMA's 8 October 2026 opinion telling EU providers to wind down services for stablecoins that aren't MiCA-compliant, concern clients in the EU. The UK is writing its own rules instead. The Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Cryptoassets) Regulations 2026 bring cryptoasset activities under FCA authorization, with full commencement on 25 October 2027. The FCA published its final rules on 30 June 2026 in five policy statements, PS26/9 to PS26/13, including PS26/10 on stablecoin issuance, and set an application window for firms from 30 September 2026 to 28 February 2027.
Under those regulations, issuing a qualifying stablecoin from an establishment in the UK needs FCA authorization. Stablecoins issued overseas, such as USDT, "will be treated in line with other qualifying cryptoassets", the explanatory memorandum says, and so fall under the rules on public offers and admissions to trading.
Tether publishes a quarterly attestation by BDO. The latest, published on 31 July 2026, showed 183.6 billion USD of tokens issued at 30 June 2026 and 187.75 billion USD of assets. If you hold a balance for more than a few days, the USDT vs USDC guide compares the two issuers' reporting.
Confirmation of Payee and Faster Payments timing
Confirmation of Payee checks the payee's name against the sort code and account number before a payment is sent, and returns a match, close match or no match, according to the Payment Systems Regulator. Under a direction from the regulator, firms with their own sort code that send Faster Payments or CHAPS for customers have had to offer it since 31 October 2024. The regulator expected nearly all Faster Payments and CHAPS transactions to be covered by then.
Faster Payments handled 5.55 billion payments worth £4.84 trillion in 2025, day and night, every day of the year, Pay.UK says. Most arrive almost immediately. Some take up to two hours, especially outside normal working hours or when a bank isn't a direct participant. Fewer than 0.1% of UK accounts, such as some savings accounts, can't receive Faster Payments at all; Pay.UK's sort code checker shows whether an account can.
How this works with Align
Align pays sterling over Faster Payments from a named GBP account in your company's name, with your company shown as the account holder. Your balance is held in USDC or USDT until you pay. Align Payments Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC in Canada as a money services business, and regulated services are provided through licensed banking partners; Align isn't a bank. See the GBP account page and check the prohibited and restricted use list before you apply.

Common questions
- Do the EU's restrictions on USDT apply to a sterling payout?
- MiCA is EU law and doesn't apply in the UK. ESMA's 8 October 2026 opinion, on services related to stablecoins that aren't MiCA-compliant, is about clients in the EU, not about the payout currency. If your company is in the EU, ask your provider which authorization covers the service.
- How long does a Faster Payment take?
- Usually almost no time at all. Pay.UK says payments can sometimes take up to two hours, and longer outside normal working hours or when one of the banks isn't a direct participant in the scheme.
- What details do I need to pay a UK bank account?
- The account holder's name as the bank holds it, the sort code and the account number. UK providers covered by Confirmation of Payee check the name against the sort code and account number before a payment is sent, so use the registered name, not a trading name.
- What if Confirmation of Payee returns a close match or no match?
- A close match means the name is similar but not the same, for example a trading name instead of the registered name; you're warned and can correct it. A no match on a supplier you pay regularly can mean the details were changed by a fraudster, so call the supplier first.
